It’s the challenges that make life interesting
(at least it seems that way once you have overcome them!)

During the last couple of months we have been facing a number of challenges at Masterbill during the development of our latest upgrades and new modules.

A number of these challenges have presented themselves as we have been developing the new Masterbill Elite Cash Flow Forecasting Module which is due to be fully released next month.  This Module includes the ability to allocate cost items to the Contractor’s Programme via a Gantt Chart and then record actual progress.

In the last week we have been working to understand and incorporate Earned Value Analysis facilities which, we are certain, will enable users to demonstrate to their clients whether their projects are ‘On Time’ and ‘On Budget’ and quantify the time and cost variances.  We are certain that this new module will prove useful to Quantity Surveyors and Contractors alike and already have a couple of users keen to Beta Test it for us in the next month – if you would like to join them please contact me and register your interest.

Other challenges have included the development of a whole new way of analysing priced documents and explaining how Freeform Bills can satisfy the requirements of a number of organisations that would not have used Masterbill in the past.

But we are not the only ones facing and overcoming challenges as you will see if you read the report from Dundee City Council, who win this month’s (if not this year’s) award for an the most unusual use of QSCad, if you think you have made use of QSCad in a more unusual way or a much more sensible way why not let us know – you never know you could feature in next month’s newsletter!

QSCad - An Unusual Use

It is not unusual for QSCad to be used for all sorts of things but this is one of the most unusual we have heard about!

What's New? - Tags!

For years Masterbill have provided BQ Production systems that provide ‘full sortation’ and enable the user to take off their measured items in any order and re-shuffle their Bills not only into SMM order but also into the sequence of their choice using a combination of Parts, Elements and Workgroups.  Now with the introduction of our latest ‘tags’ facility users will be able to both analyse and ‘filter’ their documents to match even more specific requirements. Expert's Corner - Creating a Freeform Bill

“The possibilities with Freeform Bills are endless” is a comment made by a user during a recent training session for Building Surveyors and QS’s at a Local Authority, and the signs are that this Local Authority is not alone in considering how to make full use of the Freeform Bills facility as they are seeing the benefits of preparing their Schedules of Works etc. in a system backed by a database rather than a simple Word document or Excel spreadsheet. Why Upgrade? - Reason 22 - Tender Comparison

“All I want to is click on an item and see the rates from all Tenderers” was a comment made by a number of QS Elite users when being trained to use the Tender Comparison routines incorporated into Masterbill3.  Well now that is exactly what they can do, and as users are beginning to expect Masterbill Elite takes this facility a bit further too. More...

What's New? - Trim and Extend Facilities

It is accepted that the Repeat Facilities within QSCad are a great way of saving time but what happens when they are being repeated throughout an awkward or complex shape rather than a simple rectangle?

Well QSCad now includes facilities that enable uses to repeat and then adjust their measurements to suit the awkward or complex shape using new Extend and Trim facilities which enable the user to define a line against which all repeated lines should be ‘trimmed’ or ‘extended’ to. More...

Expert's Corner - Template Component Lookups

One of the strengths of QSCad has always been the ability to demonstrate what has been measured by printing a ‘coloured up’ drawing showing exactly what has been measured.  QSCadv3 includes the full printing capabilities of a CAD system and provides options that will make QSCad v2 users extremely jealous.

See how we created a Lookup List in a Template Component to solve a reinforcement challenge.

Working on some Reinforcement Measurement facilities with our users in Malaysia we recently needed to create a single Template Component for the measurement of reinforcement bars within a floor slab which could calculate the reinforcement weight no matter which diameter bar the user selected. More...
